About Franklin A. Bontempo

Dr. Bontempo is a hematologist and attending physician for several of the UPMC facilities, providing on-call services for hospital consultations.  He sees patients at the Benign Hematology Center at Falk Clinic at 3601 5th Avenue, as well as seeing patients at the Hemostasis & Thrombosis Outpatient Clinic of Vitalant (previously known as The Institute For Transfusion Medicine) on the corner of Dawson Street and the Blvd. of the Allies.  At the HTC Outpatient clinic, Dr. Bontempo sees outpatients for evaluation, diagnoses, and the creation of a treatment plan for patients with coagulopathies and coagulopathy-related problems.

Dr. Bontempo specializes in coagulopathies across multiple medical disciplines, however, at the BHC, he also evaluates patients for the treatment of myeloproliferative diseases, that can evolve into leukemias.

Dr. Bontempo is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology.  He is the Medical Director of the Hemostasis & Thrombosis Outpatient Clinic; the Associate Director of the Hemophilia Center of Western Pennsylvania, and he serves on the advisory board of the Hemostasis and Vascular Biology Institute. 

A native of Beaver, PA, Dr. Bontempo received his medical training at Hahnemann (now Drexel) Medical School in Philadelphia.  He returned to Pittsburgh to complete his internship at Montefiore Hospital, and went back to Philadelphia to complete his residency at Hahnemann Hospital, before returning to Pittsburgh again, to complete his fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Central Blood Bank in Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine.
