Matthew D. Neal, MD, is a trauma and general surgeon certified in general surgery and surgical critical care medicine by the American Board of Surgery. He is the Vice Chair for Academic Training, and the Watson Fund Chair and Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Neal is the Director of Emergency General Surgery for UPMC Presbyterian. He received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh and completed his residency and fellowship at UPMC.
Dr. Neal's clinical interests include robotic and minimally invasive abdominal wall reconstruction, hernia, complex re-operative abdominal, and gastrointestinal surgery. He serves as the director of the Pittsburgh Trauma and Transfusion Medicine Research Center and has more than 200 peer reviewed publications, as well as research funding from the National Institutes of Health, DARPA, and the United States Department of Defense.

Dr. Neal answered my questions about my post-surgery care with specific answers. For example, he told me to return to my previous activity level using a 50% rule. If I previously used a 40 pound weight for 20 minutes, I should build up to that by using a 20 pound weight for 10 minutes. This explanation was easy to understand and follow.

Besides driving in Pittsburgh, I have been completely satisfied with this experience. Recovery and lack of pain exceeded my expectations. The Get Well card from the surgery team was a nice touch.

There's no one better than Dr. Neal. He's very knowledgeable, has excellent bed side manners and very attentive answering your questions and addressing your concerns. I was referred to him and I am very happy with the medical care that I have received from him. I feel so much more confident that I am getting the best care possible that I need to address my specific issue.

My first meeting with Dr. Neal went extremely well. He listened to all of my concerns and addressed each one . He explained all of the pros and cons about my surgery very meticulously. My upcoming surgery has been scheduled. Here's hoping he won't sleep in! Just a joke!
